UBIQUITIES SEVEN
IRAN
This seventh effort is one of my absolute favorite books. I was so fortunate to tour ancient Persia and modern Iran for 18 days and see many of the major cities and historical sites. At times we felt as if we had the country to ourselves as most prospective tourists chickened out and stayed home.
The Iranian people are the most engaging and curious citizens I have met in my life. Males and females are strictly segregated in social groupings, but the chador is less enveloping in sophisticated Teheran and Isfahan. We flew and bussed around Iran, from Teheran to Shiraz, Yazd, Kerman, and Isfahan. There was an abundance of mosques and the world heritage site of Persepolis was to be experienced in quietude. We also spent an adventurous day in Bandar e Anzali on the Caspian Sea at its UNESCO Heritage site. I was pretty brazen in taking photos of veiled Muslim women and forbidden shots of the former US Embassy. I am glad I colored outside the lines and hired a local taxi driver to take me around Teheran and the Martyrs cemetery. The tea was good but alas, the country is bereft of spirits.
