I was on tour with a simpatico group and often was given shotgun in one of the dusty vans. The driver spoke no English but soon began to understand what kinds of scenes triggered my shuttering instinct. We began and ended in the capitol city, Ulaan Bataar, which hosts the annual Naadam Festival and is the coldest capitol in the world. Our group traveled by van and small plane to Murun, Lake Hovsgol, Kara Korum, the Gobi itself, and on to dusty Dalanzagad! We drank lots of vodka in this former Russian satellite and witnessed wrestling, horseback racing, and archery in the summer Naadam games. Very colorful and an absolute must see in your lifetime. |
